I Know Who Killed Cleo Johnson is the sixth episode in the limited television series, Lady in the Lake. The episode premiered on August 16, 2024.

Synopsis[]

Arrests, confessions and connections are made as Maddie comes closer to solving Cleo's murder.

Plot Summary[]

The episode begins with a flashback to the early 1950s, where a drunk Allan Durst reveals to Maddie that he knew about her affair with his father. Hal even made a naked painting of her, which Allan saw. Meanwhile, in the present, Stephen Zawadzkie is cleared of Cleo Johnson's murder, though he remains guilty of attempting to assault Tessie Durst. Stephan’s mother is revealed to have killed Tessie.

As the search for Cleo’s killer continues, Slappy Johnson, Cleo's husband, is wrongfully arrested due to his outburst at her funeral. Reggie, meanwhile, raises suspicions by offering money and groceries to Slappy's son. Maddie and Ferdie question Shell Gordon about the Christmas lottery Cleo won, leading Shell to confront Reggie, suspecting him of involvement in Cleo's disappearance. The episode reveals that Cleo is actually alive, having faked her death to escape Baltimore.

Maddie's colleague at The Baltimore Star tries to exploit her trauma for a story, while Officer Bosco, driven by jealousy and racism, forces Ferdie to resign from the police force by threatening legal consequences for his relationship with Maddie. The episode ends with Maddie waking in a hospital bed, where she discovers Cleo, who had been appearing in her dreams, standing over her, revealing that Cleo faked her death and has returned, dressed as a nurse, just like in Maddie’s dreams.
