Synopsis[]

Maddie is met with resistance when she tries spinning Cleo’s story.

Plot Summary[]

Maddie is shocked when she discovers that Cleo is alive and now sitting in her hospital room. She finds out the truth from Cleo about what happened.

In a flashback to 1952, Cleo and her best friend Dora attempt to sneak into Shell Gordon’s club to participate in a talent contest. Although they are nearly kicked out, Shell, intrigued by Cleo’s potential, offers her a job to manage his books in exchange for allowing her and Dora to perform. However, overwhelmed by memories of her father, Cleo backs out at the last moment, leaving Dora to perform alone, singing a heartfelt song to Cleo. However, Dora overdoses, leaving Cleo devastated by her friend's death.

Reggie was ordered to kill Cleo but instead the two come up with a plan. Dora was planning to move to Europe, and to cover up her death, Cleo and Reggie decide to make it appear as if Cleo was the one who died. They dress Dora's body in Cleo's clothes and Reggie places it in a fountain, leading everyone to believe Cleo is dead. This act is meant to protect Cleo from further threats and allow her to escape with money she won from Shell Gordon’s rigged lottery.

Maddie starts to realize her own personal truth. She has built her journalistic career by exploiting others, reducing them to mere symbols. Her son Seth, who discovers that Milton is not his biological father, and her lover, Detective Ferdie Platt, who resigns from the police due to their controversial relationship, are just extensions of her personal and professional saga. Yet, Cleo’s survival throws Maddie’s career into jeopardy, especially when Cleo insists that Maddie cease writing about her to preserve her anonymity.

Maddie finds herself at a crossroads when she learns that Ferdie has proposed they move to Virginia to openly live as a mixed-race couple, influenced by the famous case of the Lovings. However, Maddie’s ambitions and the racial realities of the time overshadow her personal desires, leaving Ferdie disillusioned.

Later, Maddie meets with Cleo, who is in disguise, who hands over evidence that could bring down Shell Gordon. Despite Cleo's cooperation, she makes it clear that any further storytelling by Maddie could endanger her.

Shell Gordon gets arrested, Slappy gets freed after a confession by Reggie. Maddie becomes a book author, writing a nonfiction book titled The Lady in the Lake as per Cleo’s guidelines. Meanwhile, Cleo, now going by the name Dora Carter, begins a new life in Europe with her sons, embracing a fresh start as a singer in a Paris club.

In a flashforward to 1976, in Baltimore, Maddie gets recognized as a celebrated author during a book signing, yet she confronts the harsh reality that the story that made her famous was built on falsehoods and exploitation.
